The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
